June 7, 2010

Huge congrats to Antonie Henning (CCIE #21500) for passing his CCIE SP last week in Bangalore.

To my knowledge that makes him one of two in South-Africa with a dual CCIE being R&S and SP.

That is truly well-done buddy:)

Antonie promised to post his experience on his blog…soon.

CCIE Flyer

March 17, 2010

It is a real privilege for Routing-Bits to be featured in the world-famous March edition of CCIE Flyer.

The first time I became aware of CCIE Flyer, Eman Conde and the good work he is doing in the CCIE Industry was last year November. (I know, I am slow)
See me previous post.

CCIE Flyer features articles from some of the biggest names in the network world, from Scott Morris,  Terry Slatery, Darby Weaver to Narbik Kocharins. CCIE Flyer I believe reaches more 16000 subscribers a month.

So the week before last I get an email from Eman, saying its time for me to put my thinking cap on, because he wants a article. Hmmm, I am a techy by heart. What could I possibly submit that would be light but easy reading, while still of good use. After much thought I submitted what I do best. Showing guys how to do things easier. And with the R&S v4 troubleshooting addition that scared off so many candidates, I thought I’ll share some of my troubleshooting experience. Simply by showing how easy it is to draft a personal troubleshooting methodology, if a technology is well understood.

Head over there and read the article.

Also see what other articles are featured, and if you not already subscribed to CCIE Flyer now is the best time.

Welcome the 3rd Sextupple CCIE

February 10, 2010

It is absolutely incredible that Matthew White has successfully completed his wireless CCIE lab on the 27th of January 2010.  Along with the previous 5 CCIEs in less than 5 years, Matthew has just with joined to super élite Kings of the CCIE Mountain.

There are few words to describe the admiration for this huge accomplishment.Well Done Matthew!!!

See my TOP-CCIE post I did a while back.

Looks like space on top of the mountain are getting a little crowded. Michael could always do a seventh. :)

CCIE Flyer

November 19, 2009

I really enjoy meeting and discovering the people who helped build, engineer and nurture the industry I love so much. Also, those key individuals that have seen and helped the networking industry to grow to the colossal size it is today. I admire these individuals as they give me perspective on my achievements and more importantly, motivate me to follow in their steps. This is why the CCIE was my first stop.

Emmanuel Conde (aka Eman) from CCIE Flyer, has been involved in IT since before networking and the CCIE program came about. Eman is very well-known by those people who matter in the Networking Realm.

During his travels he has met some of the most influential individuals, who I would like to meet one day. From Scott Morris to Terry Slatery to Darby Weaver, they all know Eman and talk highly of him. He is also the only CCIE recruiter promoted by Cisco Systems. But what is so incredible about Eman, is that he tirelessly devotes most of his time to developing Cisco talent, and placing CCIE  candidates from all over the world in their deserving jobs. His believe and support in the networking industry is truly inspiring.

So what? Why the fuss? Well Eman, is the man who knows the trades and trends, I think better than most.  Eman has a publication that reaches thousands of people every month, called the CCIE Flyer. It contains the latest news and happenings regarding CISCO, the CCIE Program and other general Networking stuff. I read through most of the content, which is really appetising.

Feel free to visit Eman’s site and subscribe to it:)

Huge Congrats to James Yeo – 11676

November 11, 2009

A good friend of mine has just passed his 3rd CCIE, and to my knowledge, this makes him the ONLY tripple CCIE in South-Africa.

He was one of the first security CCIE in Africa in 2003, and now James has earned himself the elite position of being 1 of 390 people in the world… holding 3 CCIE’s.

jamesHuge congratulations and well done!!!

Wendell Odom shares his peak at v4

October 23, 2009

CCIE R&S version 4 kicked off this week, and part of a BETA testing from Cisco, Maurilio Goritto asked a couple Cisco Press CCIE authors and other CCIE veterans to ‘retake’ the lab, and provide their input on the structure, layout, difficulty, time and overall fairness.

Wendell Odom, renowned Cisco Press author, shared his view of these topics at his Networkworld blog.

One big change regarding the actual lab day, (besides the net content/TS part), is no more printed lab exercise book, I personally won’t like that. According to Wendell there is a new GUI, in the format of indexed content, clickable diagrams and questions.

Read this article if you taking the new, now current version 4 of the CCIE R&S.

Well done to Nick Passing

June 21, 2009

A huge congrats to a friend of mine Nick Treasure in passing his CCIE R&S in Dubai last week. (CCIE #24561)

When I studied for the R&S I found that there was no material to bridge the gap between the theory books and the practical lab workbooks.  Once done with the theory, starting with practical labs you quickly realize that there is ample content the theory books doesn’t cover, and as a result it tends to take you longer going through the practice labs.

So I created a review guide to include all the is needed. I found it to be an absolute life saver, since it was so complete and detailed, yet a summarized version (200 pages) of everything studied up to that point.

After Nick sadly failed his first attempt I offered the use of my BOOK to him for review before his second attempt. He dubbed it the “holy grail” of networking and that became a standing jokes in the office.

Here is the IM log chatting to him earlier this week:

(1:10:07 PM) Nickt69: Sup Fellow Network God
(1:10:34 PM) Nickt69: CCIE 24561 at your service.
(1:10:45 PM) Ruhann: lo :)
(1:10:59 PM) Ruhann: huge congrats and well done buddy
(1:11:04 PM) Ruhann: hoz it feels,
(1:11:25 PM) Nickt69: Awesome!
(1:12:15 PM) Ruhann: how was the exam?
(1:12:46 PM) Nickt69: Exam was easy thanks to your complete notes..!!
(1:12:57 PM) Ruhann: seriously?
(1:13:43 PM) Nickt69: Yes.. No bullshit.

Scott Morris becomes a 10-year CCIE

June 7, 2009

I actually forgot to post this on the day. But better late than never.

On the 18th May 2009, Mr Scott Morris became a 10-year CCIE.

scott morris

In 2003 upon passing his 4th CCIE, Scott was one of only four people in the world who held four-CCIE certificates and the only non-Cisco employee among this elite group at the time. Not bad for someone who majored in Photojournalism.  Scott has since build a huge and well-respected reputation in the Networking World through consultancy and being involved with many training materials and books. Among his armory of knowledge, he also has a great sense of humor. In addition Scott is a JNCIE too.

Scott is in my opinion one of the leaders in the CCIE industry,  his wealth of knowledge, understanding and experience is truly impressive. Right now I believe being a 10-year CCIE is just one extra thing to separate the old-school good guys from the new-school horde (me and many other followers).

I think this is well-done and a great achievement, congratulations :D

Cisco CCIE R&S – 1st Time PASS

April 21, 2009

It is with great pleasure, pride and excitement that I am typing this, despite the painful agony of waiting a whole weekend for the result.
(My advice, NEVER do your lab on a Friday)

On Friday the 17th April, I passed the R&S Lab Exam on my 1st attempt with the Cisco Mobile-Lab in Bryanston SA.
It was an experience unlike anything I have had before, the build-up, the exam, the agony of waiting, then the result and now the afterglow.
My biggest fear was the possibility of becoming a statistic that most candidates only pass on the 2nd /3rd attempt.
But despite the natural fear and anxiety, Friday belonged to me,  it was my day to earn my number:

Now that I have taken the LAB, I can really share my comments and views regarding the structure/experience.

Great Customer Service

March 30, 2009

For those who know me, and yes off topic, will know the grumpy me is not one to give credit unless necessary.

With thee date coming closer and closer, I felt the time has come to book a couple Mock-Labs to see how challenging it might be. I made the decision to book these with IP-Expert.

Ill be honest, I do find www.ipexpert.com not very user friendly and it lacks of important information. One example,  my first booked lab session Saturday morning, but to log-on and play,  you have to go to Proctor-labs,  not www.ipexpert.com. But there is no information to let you know this, or none that I could find 06:00 in the morning while my paid for lab-time is ticking away. Playing around, I eventually came across  proctorlabs.com where you have to log in with separate credentials. Odd, indeed, but I was 10 minutes down, so did what I had to, to get going, and finished a challenging, yet very satisfying Lab.

So last night I was browsing their website,  aiming to book the 5 Mock-Labs and I proceeded to pay, only to realize what I bought is not the right thing. Not a nice feeling when you get the happy notification text from your bank to say “the payment was successful”.  The information on the website I found very misleading, and having beyond buyers remorse I mailed them fokes at IPExpert in the hope that there might be some sort of resolution to this.

So I dealt with Mike Down from sales. Mike handled this in a truly professional manner, and were more than happy to resolve the matter to my benefit and much sooner than I could have imagined. I was blown away at how quickly and efficiently this was dealt with and corrected by Mike and Cat Breiling. Having this sort of customer service really makes you hate some on-line sales guys just a little to much!

No matter what your product is, satisfied customers will always return, and at the end-of-the-day,  sales are all about satisfied customers. Mike and Cat please keep it up. Love your work.
